The Cave “Grotta Gigante”

The tourist largest cave in the world, registered in the Guinness Book of Records.

Discovered in 1840, at the dawn of exploring for groundwater, was taken over by cavers in 1890 and equipped for tours to the public in 1908. It ‘consists of an immense cavern into which some large galleries is all that remains of an ancient river system abandoned by the waters of a few million years ago. Collapses and fills occurred in later times have profoundly altered the original appearance. An easy tourist route, with a special artificial lighting brings out the grandeur, richness and variability of the forms of this particular underground environment.

Karst autochthon

From Borgo Grotta Gigante you move in Sagrado to visit the MILIC farm where cattle, pigs and other animals are fed with natural products. Tasting of local and unique wines, accompanied by sausages born from ancient recipes. From Sagrado continue to Repen with a visit to “Karst house” of ancient building and where in the end of August are celebrated “wedding karst.”

  • Departure at 09.00 from Piazza Oberdan by tram, arrival to Opčine and transfer to Grotta Gigante
  • Visit the farm, wine tasting and sliced
  • Return to Trieste at 17:00
